We changed the area of operations today. I decided to go South and in close to beach. It paid off , the Snapper were fired up. We released close to 50 and kept our legal limit of 8. The grouper didn't do much with only 7 throwbacks. Tight Lines!!

Dennis: Really enjoyed our Sunday trip with sons David & Ken! Would like to learn whether you were able to verify the federal regs about redfish in federal waters. That still puzzles us.
Thanks! Larry Duncan

Dennis:
I couldn’t help but sympathize with you at sea last Sunday regarding a red drum caught in Federal waters. I became painfully aware of that regulation a decade ago while fishing out of Mobile, AL where that rule was rigorously enforced.
So Monday, I called the FMP to ask if the rule is true and enforced. The good r answered yes to both and gave me a reference (below). He added that the regulation was so little known that warnings are usually issued in lieu of tickets. I also checked with Steve ??? of C&H Lures who said he had never heard of the “no reds allowed in federal waters” rule.
Anyhow, here is the reference to it for your information.

See page 6 that notes that RED DRUM are "Closed to possession or harvesting in Federal Water." That would be three miles out from shore.
I didn’t think of SAFMC when I think limits. Now I do.
